iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS ringtones:

The first music ringtone feature for the iPhone was introduced in the US on September 5, 2007.  The feature let iPhone users create custom ringtones from songs purchased from the iTunes Store for a small additional fee.

The iPhone ringtones can last between 3 and 30 seconds long from any part of the iTunes song.  It can also can fade in and fade out.  You can pause it from from half a second to five seconds when looped, or loop continuously.

All iPhone ringtone customization can be done in iTunes, or alternatively with Apple's software GarageBand software 4.1.1 or later (available only on Mac OS X) or third-party tools.
